For instance, things in the universe are so far away, they’re hard to see or measure. Often, theories are made because there is no way scientists can prove certain things. One of the most famous was Albert Einstein.īefore he died (back in 1955), he came up with many “theories” - really good guesses - about what happens in the universe. To learn how LIGO achieves this seemingly impossible task, visit LIGO's Interferometer. There are many people who study the universe, and try to understand it. In fact, by the time gravitational waves from LIGO's first detection reached us, the amount of space-time wobbling they generated was a 1000 times smaller than the nucleus of an atom! LIGO was designed to make such inconceivable, exquisitely small measurements. While the processes that generate gravitational waves are extremely violent and destructive, by the time the waves reach Earth they are thousands of billions of times smaller, diminishing over time and space just as the waves from a pebble dropped in a pond get smaller and smaller as they move away from the source. LIGO's first detection will go down in history as one of humanity's greatest scientific achievements. But these confirmations had always come indirectly or mathematically and not through direct contact or interaction with an instrument.Īll of this changed on Septemwhen LIGO physically sensed the undulations in spacetime caused by gravitational waves generated by two colliding black holes 1.3 billion light-years away. Since then, many astronomers have studied pulsar radio-emissions (pulsars are neutron stars that emit beams of radio waves) and found similar effects, further confirming the existence of gravitational waves. In 1993, Hulse and Taylor would receive the Nobel Prize in Physics " for the discovery of a new type of pulsar, a discovery that has opened up new possibilities for the study of gravitation".Īrtist's Impression of a Binary Pulsar. After just four years, they first reported seeing a change in the period that verified that the stars were getting closer to each other at the rate predicted by general relativity (GR) if they were radiating gravitational waves (the rate predicted by GR agreed with the observed rate to within one half of one percent). Knowing that the system could be studied to test Einstein's prediction, Taylor and two colleagues (Joel Weisberg and Lee Fowler) began tracking the radio emissions from the stars to measure how their orbital period changed over time. This was exactly the type of system that general relativity predicted should radiate gravitational waves. In that year, two astronomers, Russell Hulse and Joseph Taylor, using the Arecibo Radio Observatory in Puerto Rico discovered a binary pulsar 21000 light years from Earth. Though Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves in 1916, the first proof of their existence didn't arrive until 1974, 20 years after his death. Your browser does not support this video tag. They are made visible here to illustrate their propagation away from the source. Note that gravitational waves themselves are invisible. The animation below illustrates how gravitational waves are emitted by two neutron stars as they orbit each other and then coalesce (credit: NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center). Other gravitational waves are predicted to be caused by the rotation of neutron stars that are not perfect spheres, and possibly even the remnants of gravitational radiation created by the Big Bang. The strongest gravitational waves are produced by cataclysmic events such as colliding black holes, supernovae (massive stars exploding at the end of their lifetimes), and colliding neutron stars. These cosmic ripples would travel at the speed of light, carrying with them information about their origins, as well as clues to the nature of gravity itself. Einstein's mathematics showed that massive accelerating objects (things like neutron stars or black holes orbiting each other) would disrupt space-time in such a way that 'waves' of undulating space-time would propagate in all directions away from the source. Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves in 1916 in his general theory of relativity. Gravitational waves are 'ripples' in space-time caused by some of the most violent and energetic processes in the Universe. Students shouldn't have to pay outrageous amounts of money just to learn sign language. This cartoon (adapted with permission from the artist) sums up my philosophy regarding curriculum. Another very real and important part of the Lifeprint ASL curriculum project is that of being able to use the "magic" of the internet to provide a high quality sign language curriculum to those who need it the most but are often least able to afford it. Thus, going through the lessons sequentially starting with lesson 1 allows you to reach communicative competence in sign language very quickly-and it is based on second language acquisition research (mixed with a couple decades of real world ASL teaching experience). Then I took the concepts that appeared the most frequently and translated those concepts into their equivalent ASL counterparts and included them in the lessons moving from most frequently used to less frequently used. I compiled lists of concepts from concordance research based on a language database (corpus) of hundreds of thousands of language samples. The median can only be used on data that can be ordered – that is, from ordinal, interval and ratio levels of measurement. The level of measurement of your variable also determines whether you can use the median. In contrast, the positions of the mean and mode can vary in skewed distributions.įor this reason, the median is often reported as a measure of central tendency for variables such as income, because these distributions are usually positively skewed. In a negatively skewed distribution, there’s a cluster of higher scores and a spread out tail on the left.īecause the median only uses one or two values from the middle of a dataset, it’s unaffected by extreme outliers or non-symmetric distributions of scores. In a positively skewed distribution, there’s a cluster of lower scores and a spread out tail on the right. In skewed distributions, more values fall on one side of the center than the other, and the mean, median and mode all differ from each other. The median is the most informative measure of central tendency for skewed distributions or distributions with outliers. While this is considered acceptable in some contexts, it is not always seen as correct. Then the mean of the middle values can be calculated to find the median. In practice, ordinal data is sometimes converted into a numerical format and treated like quantitative data for the sake of convenience. The mean cannot be calculated for ordinal data, so the median can’t be found for an even-numbered dataset.įor example, if the two middle values are “slow” and “medium,” you can’t calculate the mean of these values. Can you find the median for an even-numbered ordinal dataset? The median is the value at the 4th position. ![]() Next, find the middle value using, where n is the number of values in the dataset. You categorize reaction times of participants into 3 groups: slow, medium or fast.įirst, order all values in ascending order. We’ll walk through the steps for an odd-numbered ordinal dataset with 7 values. The process for finding the median is almost the same. Ordinal data is organized into categories with a rank order – for example language ability level (beginner, intermediate, or fluent) or level of agreement (strongly agree, agree, etc.). But you can sometimes also identify the median for ordinal data. ![]() The median is usually used for quantitative data, which means the values in the dataset are numerical. The median weekly pay for this dataset is is 425 US dollars. To find the median, calculate the mean by adding together the middle values and dividing them by two. H still points back to G, but so does new commit I: H ? it has a different hash ID, so let's call it I andĬommit H is still there in your repository. The new commit is exactly like H except in two ways: Now, if you have a tiny typo in commit H and run git commit -amend, what Git does is to make a new commit. That's a commit so it's numbered and has the same kind of stuff and points backwards yet again, and so on. (Commit H also contains a full snapshot of every file, though we won't look at this at all here.)Ĭommit G, being a commit, is numbered by some big ugly random-looking hash ID, and has a snapshot and metadata and hence points backwards to still-earlier commit F. Commit H itself contains the hash ID of earlier commit G. ![]() Your branch name "points to" (contains the hash ID of) commit H. Here's how Git sees-and finds-these commits. ![]() Imagine a simple chain of commits, ending with your most recent commit whose hash is some big ugly random-looking hash ID that we'll just call H. You just need to know that each commit is numbered-every commit has a unique number, which is its hash ID-and that Git finds commits in a sort of backwards (perhaps even backassward) fashion, by having a branch name or other name locate the most recent commit for you, and then working backwards from there. What it really did was make a new and improved replacement commit. The (tiny) lie with git commit -amend is that it didn't change a commit at all. The reason this is important to know-the reason you need to know that git commit -amend is a lie-is that what git commit -amend does locally, can be done here when pushing a commit to another Git repository. Please read my answer on "Reverting Merges vs. There are issues to be aware of when reverting merge commits. That commit "undoes" the changes that the merge introduced. git revert EĪfter reverting that merge commit, you will have the following history. It moves you forward in history rather than modifying history. Using git revert creates a new commit that negates the content of the merge commit instead of rewinding it. It is generally a bad idea to modify history that has already been pushed. Other wise they will just end up pushing up the same commit you just reset. Other developers will then need to know to use git-fetch followed by git reset -hard origin/master, and they may even need to perform a complicated git rebase -onto if they have new commits after the merge commit you removed. To push this up you will need to perform a forced push. If you reset, you are effectively rewinding history. Using git-reset after having pushed the commit means you've changed history that other people already have, This is bad. In that case someone had already reverted, but had some funky behavior after wanting to undo the revert - so take a look after reading this answer so you can get a full understanding of how it works. This will explain how revert works and how reset work with respect to merge commits.
